The Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Method worldwide

Step by step, the KMC method is diffusing in all the neonatal units as a tool for humanizing the high technology or to complement the scarcity of human y/o technological resources in the big health obstetric facilities of the developing world. Actually KMC can be considered as a unique available tool to decrease the morbimortality and better the nutrition of the low birth weight infants in the developing countries
There is a lack of scientific evaluations on KMC, not anymore on its efficacy or safety but on its impact according to the level of development of the setting where KMC is implemented. We need references data to be able to initiate a massive diffusion of KMC. The Kangaroo Foundation, based in Colombia and known for its research on KMC, designed in collaboration with more than 10 centres in developing countries of different levels of development various projects aim to evaluated this impact.. How to find funds to support these projects? That s the key question.
18 millions of Low Birth Weight born each year, one third will die in the first year and one third in the first month. We must give the access to KMC to all these fragile infants independently of their origin. That s our mission.

studies on MKC
We have published one study on the effectiveness of MKC on reducing procedural pain (heel lance) in premature neonates 32-36 weeks, as did Susie Ludington-Hoe, who has actually done several studies on MKC. These studies on pain reduction followed the study by Gray in fullterms. We have completed two more studies that are in preparation. As well I have three students doing their theses on KC (not always Mother)

Kangaroo Position
Dear Celeste Johnston
We are working since nearly 9 months on a "Evidence based KMC guideline" and we did one chapter on Kangaroo position and pain and we included this 3 papers you mentionned. Definitively Kangaroo Position is a good alternative to dismish pain in short painful procedures for LBW infants, but the mayor resistance to emply it in routine in developping countries is to accept to do the painful procedure in front of the mother or the father. First European Conference on Kangaroo Mother Care
The first Europeen Conference on Kangaroo Mother Care will be held In Uppsala University, Sweden, visit the website (www.akademikonferens.uu.se/KMCeurope08 ), send your abstract and prepare your travel is you are interested in KMC
KMC Europe 08
1st European Conference on the Kangaroo Mother Care method
6-7 October 2008 Uppsala, Sweden
7th International Workshop on Kangaroo Mother Care
8 -11 October 2008 Uppsala, Sweden
Main topic: Why KMC in a high tech setting
Conference: Target group for the conference, which will take place in the Main Auditorium of Uppsala University, are persons involved in maternal and child health care, perinatal, neonatal, and pediatric care, irrespective of profession.
Key note speakers will include: Nils Bergman, South Africa; Nathalie Charpak, Colombia; Melvin Konner and Susan Ludington, USA; Kerstin Uvnäs Moberg and Ann-Marie Widström, Sweden.
We welcome participation with short oral presentations and posters.
Workshop: Target groups for the workshop are persons, involved in clinical work, education, administration, and research related to KMC.
Goals for the workshop, which will be held in the Main building of Uppsala University, are to discuss obstacles to and possibilities for KMC in high tech settings as well as in settings with limited resources, and the revised KMC guidelines, currently under preparation.
For the workshop we look forward to the participation by experts with oral presentations and posters concerning diverse aspects of KMC such parent-infant skin-to-skin contact, practical application of KMC on infants in intensive care, parents’ participation in infants’ care and parent support, neonatal unit environment, staff attitudes and education, and early discharge.
Discussions about topics to be chosen by the participants will be held in working groups.
It is our aim to document the contents of the workshop in a new consensus statement on KMC in a high tech setting by the International Network of KMC (here meaning the participants in the workshop), which will be submitted to a scientific journal for publication.
We are convinced that you participation as an expert at the conference and the workshop would contribute greatly to the quality and impact of these events.
Welcome to Uppsala!
